How this calculator works

A circle skirt is drafted with two arcs from one corner point: a small one for the waist and a big one for the hem. This calculator finds both radii from your measurements. The waist radius comes from unrolling your waist circumference around whatever fraction of a circle you chose — full, three-quarter, half, or quarter — and the hem radius is simply that plus your skirt length and hem allowance. The seam allowance is subtracted from the drawn waist radius for you, which is the step that trips up most first drafts (and the FAQ explains why the error must go in that direction).

The fabric estimate checks whether your circle physically fits your fabric's width and suggests a cutting layout — one piece on the fold when it fits, half-circle pieces with seams when it doesn't, and an honest "won't fit" when the geometry says so.

The formula

waist radius r = (waist + ease) ÷ (2π × f)     f = 1, ¾, ½, ¼
cut waist radius = r − seam allowance
hem radius     = r + length + hem allowance
hem circumference = 2π × f × (r + length)

Pure circle geometry — circumference equals 2πr, applied to the fraction of the circle the skirt uses — as presented in standard flat-pattern drafting references (e.g., Helen Joseph-Armstrong, Patternmaking for Fashion Design). The seam-allowance subtraction follows from the stitching line sitting inside the cut hole: sew at ½″ from a hole cut at r − ½″ and the finished waist lands back on r.

Worked example

Draft a full circle skirt for a 28″ waist (+1″ ease), 22″ long, ½″ seam allowance, 1″ hem, on 60″ fabric:

  1. Waist radius: 29 ÷ (2π × 1) = 4⅝″ (4.615″)
  2. Cut waist radius: 4.615 − 0.5 = 4⅛″
  3. Hem radius: 4.615 + 22 + 1 = 27⅝″
  4. Fit check: 2 × 27.6 = 55.2″ ≤ 60″ — cuts as one folded piece
  5. Fabric: 55.2″ ≈ 1⅝ yards
  6. Finished hem sweeps 2π × 26.6 = 167″ — nearly 14 feet of hem to sew

Switch the same numbers to a half circle and the waist radius doubles to 9¼″, the hem radius grows to 32¼″ — no longer fitting 60″ fabric in one piece — while the hem shrinks to a much hemmable 8 feet. The fractions trade twirl for practicality.

Assumptions & tips

  • Draft on paper first. Pattern paper is cheaper than fashion fabric. Draw both arcs with a tape-measure compass (pin at the corner, pencil at the mark), check the waist arc against your actual waistband, then cut fabric.
  • Cut the waist hole small, then sneak up. You can always enlarge a waist hole by trimming; you cannot shrink one. If between sizes, round the waist radius down.
  • Stay-stitch the waist immediately. The waist curve is partly bias and stretches with every handling. A line of stitching just inside the seam line right after cutting keeps your 29″ from becoming 31″ by hemming day.
  • Respect the hang-before-hem ritual. 24–48 hours on a hanger, then re-mark the hem level from the floor. Bias droop is physics, not a mistake.
  • Narrow hems suit curves. A 1″ allowance turned twice fights the curve; a ¼–½″ rolled or faced hem lies flat. If you plan a narrow hem, reduce the hem allowance and the calculator's fabric estimate follows.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the waist radius so much smaller than I expected?

Because the waist is a circumference and the radius is that circumference divided by 2π — about 6.28. A 29-inch waist needs only a 4.6-inch radius on a full circle. Sewists who eyeball this the first time usually cut the hole far too big, and a waist hole cut too big cannot be uncut — which is exactly why the calculator subtracts the seam allowance from the drawn radius, so your error margin is on the safe side.

Full, three-quarter, half, or quarter circle — how do I choose?

It is a trade between drama and drape versus fabric and heft. A full circle gives maximum twirl and uses the most fabric; a half circle hangs in softer, fewer folds and can often be cut from one width; a quarter circle is nearly an A-line. The waist math changes with the fraction: the smaller the fraction, the larger the drawn radius for the same waist, because the same circumference must fit into less arc.

Should I add ease to my waist measurement?

If the skirt has a fitted waistband with a zipper, add about an inch of wearing ease. If it will have an elastic waist, the relevant measurement is your hips plus a couple of inches — the skirt must pull on over them — and the elastic then gathers it in. The calculator's ease field handles the first case; for the second, put your hip measurement in the waist field.

Why does my circle skirt hem hang unevenly after a day?

Bias stretch. On a circle skirt, parts of the hem hang on the fabric's bias — the diagonal — which stretches under its own weight while the straight-grain sections do not. The fix is patience: let the finished skirt hang for 24 to 48 hours before hemming, then trim the drooped areas level and hem. Every pattern-drafting text includes this step, and every first-timer who skips it regrets it.

What fabrics work best?

Medium-weight fabrics with drape: rayon challis, crepe, lightweight wool, cotton lawn for a crisper look. Very stiff fabric stands away like a lampshade; very stretchy knits grow at the hem. For a first skirt, a stable woven with some drape is the forgiving choice — and check the fabric width before buying, since it decides whether your circle fits without piecing.
